1-Hexanol

Fresh green aroma profile. A light, green, slightly winey and fruity note with subtle fatty undertones, reminiscent of young shoots and leaves — ideal for natural-style fragrance compositions.

Good formulation compatibility. Readily miscible with ethanol, propylene glycol, and most oils, supporting use across flavor, fragrance, and personal-care systems.

Naturally occurring. Found in trace amounts in citrus fruits, berries, tea leaves, and a range of essential oils.

Versatile flavor and fragrance ingredient. Present in lavender, geranium, and violet leaf oils as well as banana, apple, and strawberry aromas; widely applied in flavors, fragrances, and personal-care products.

Product Description

1-Hexanol is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 157 °C and a relative density d₄²⁰ ≈ 0.819. It is readily miscible with ethanol, propylene glycol, and most oils, giving it broad compatibility across flavor, fragrance, and personal-care systems. Its aroma is a fresh green note reminiscent of young shoots and leaves, with subtle winey, fruity, and fatty undertones.

1-Hexanol and its carboxylic acid esters occur naturally in trace amounts in citrus fruits, berries, tea leaves, and a variety of essential oils — including geranium, lavender, and violet leaf oils — as well as in banana, apple, and strawberry aromas. This natural occurrence makes it a valuable ingredient in flavor and fragrance compositions.

Application Scenarios

Flavor and fragrance. 1-Hexanol is a natural constituent of essential oils such as geranium oil, contributing fresh green top notes. In perfume compositions, it is added in trace amounts to violet, osmanthus, magnolia, and ylang-ylang bases to introduce a fresh, leafy green character. In food flavors, it is used at low dosage in coconut, berry, and other fruit flavor systems.

Industrial and chemical uses. It also serves as a solvent and chromatographic reference standard, and as an intermediate in organic synthesis for surfactants, plasticizers, and other fatty-alcohol derivatives, as well as certain pharmaceutical intermediates (including preservative and sedative-type compounds).

Regulatory status. 1-Hexanol is an approved edible flavoring under China's GB 2760 standard, mainly for coconut and berry flavors.
