Sodium Xylenesulfonate

Effective hydrotrope and solubilizer. Improves the solubility, clarity, and stability of surfactant-based formulations in aqueous systems, lowering cloud point and reducing viscosity.

Multifunctional formulation aid. Enhances detergency, aids emulsification and dispersion, and provides viscosity control across a wide range of liquid formulations.

Broad industrial applications. Widely used in household and industrial cleaners, dishwashing liquids, personal-care products, coatings, dyes, electroplating, textiles, and other chemical processes.

High water solubility and compatibility. Readily soluble in water with excellent electrolyte compatibility, supporting efficient processing and consistent product performance.

Product Description

Sodium xylenesulfonate (SXS) is a colorless to pale yellow clear liquid with excellent water solubility. A 1 wt% aqueous solution has a pH of 7.0, a dynamic viscosity of 10 mPa·s, and a kinematic viscosity of 2.7 mm²/s at 20 °C.

SXS functions as a hydrotrope, coupling agent, solubilizer, cloud-point depressant, detergent booster, dispersant, emulsifier, and viscosity regulator. It is widely used across household and industrial formulations — including shampoos, laundry and dishwashing detergents, dry-cleaning agents, hard-surface cleaners, metal-processing cleaners, disinfectants, adhesives, dyes and pigments, electroplating baths, metalworking fluids, photographic materials, inks, textile processing, and leather manufacturing.

Application Scenarios

Household and industrial liquid detergents. The largest end-use of SXS. As a hydrotrope and cloud-point depressant, it keeps concentrated laundry liquids, dishwashing liquids, all-purpose cleaners, and bathroom cleaners clear, low-viscosity, and phase-stable at low temperatures, while boosting detergency in high-electrolyte formulations.

Personal care. Used in shampoos, body washes, and liquid soaps for viscosity control, optical clarity, and surfactant-system stability.

Industrial and institutional cleaning. Formulated into hard-surface cleaners, metal degreasers, bottle-washing compounds, and CIP cleaners, where it performs reliably under high-alkaline, high-salt conditions.

Agrochemicals. Serves as a solubilizer and dispersant in herbicide and pesticide aqueous concentrates.

Textile, leather, and dyeing. Acts as a wetting and dispersing agent in textile scouring, dyeing, and leather processing.

Electroplating and surface finishing. Used as a wetting and leveling additive in electroplating baths.

Coatings, inks, and pigments. A hydrotrope and dispersant in water-based coatings and ink formulations.
