Product Description
Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) is a colorless, volatile organic compound with the chemical formula CH₂=C(CH₃)COOCH₃. It is the methyl ester of methacrylic acid (MAA) and an important reactive monomer widely used in the production of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and other acrylic polymers.
MMA is a flammable liquid with a characteristic fruity odor. It has relatively high vapor pressure, moderate water solubility, and a low octanol/water partition coefficient. Commercial-grade MMA is typically supplied at high purity, commonly around 99.9%, with a small amount of polymerization inhibitor added to help maintain storage stability and prevent premature polymerization.
Methyl methacrylate is widely used as a key raw material for acrylic resins, coatings, adhesives, plastics, optical materials, and other polymer products.

| Toxicity | The acute toxicity of methyl methacrylate is low. Irritation of the skin, eye, and nasal cavity has been observed in rodents and rabbits exposed to relatively high concentrations of methyl methacrylate. The chemical is a mild skin sensitizer in animals. The effect observed most frequently at lowest concentration after repeated inhalation exposure to methyl methacrylate is irritation of the nasal cavity. Effects on the kidney and liver at higher concentrations have also been reported. |

Application Scenarios
Acrylic Sheet and Resin Production
Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) is widely used to manufacture solid acrylic sheets, acrylic emulsions, molding compounds, and extrusion resins, providing excellent optical clarity, weatherability, and surface properties.
Methacrylate Resins and Plastics
MMA is an important raw material for the production of methacrylate resins and acrylic plastics. It can also be used as an intermediate for producing higher methacrylate esters, such as n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) and 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (2-EHMA).
Coatings, Adhesives, and Specialty Materials
MMA-based polymers and copolymers are used in water-based and solvent-based coatings, adhesives, sealants, leather and paper coatings, printing inks, floor polishes, and textile finishes. They are also used in dental materials, orthopedic bone cements, artificial nails, and orthotic components.
Optical and Transparent Plastic Products
MMA is a key feedstock for PMMA and other transparent acrylic materials. Injection- and extrusion-molded acrylic products are valued for their high optical clarity, weather resistance, and scratch resistance. Applications include lighting components, electronic displays, glazing and windows, furniture, tableware, automotive lighting and instrument panels, protective equipment, laboratory products, microwave oven doors, and appliance components.
