Application Scenarios
Acetylacetone is a key intermediate in organic synthesis. It condenses with guanidine to form 2-amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, a valuable starting material for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
It is also used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, an additive in gasoline and lubricating oils, a drying accelerator for coatings and varnishes, and a component in fungicidal and insecticidal formulations. In addition, acetylacetone serves as a ligand and catalyst precursor for petroleum refining, hydrogenation, carbonylation, and oxidation reactions.
Further industrial applications include the chelating removal of metal oxide residues from porous solids and the deactivation of residual catalysts in polypropylene production. In Europe and the United States, more than 50% of acetylacetone consumption is directed toward veterinary antidiarrheal pharmaceuticals and livestock feed additives.
