Product Description
Phenol (C₆H₅OH / C₆H₆O) is an important aromatic organic compound and chemical intermediate. It is typically supplied as a white crystalline solid and is characterized by its distinctive hydroxyl group attached directly to a benzene ring.
Phenol has high chemical reactivity and serves as a key feedstock for the production of phenolic resins, plastics, synthetic fibers, pharmaceuticals, and other specialty chemicals.
It is widely used in the manufacture of phenolic resins and engineering materials, while also serving as an upstream raw material for various pharmaceutical and chemical intermediates. Phenol-derived products are used in applications ranging from automotive components and electrical materials to coatings, adhesives, and industrial products.
Phenol has also been used historically as a disinfectant and antiseptic because of its ability to disrupt cell membranes and denature proteins. However, its direct use in such applications is limited due to its toxicity and corrosive properties.
In addition, phenol is utilized in chemical synthesis, analytical chemistry, and selected detergent and specialty chemical formulations. Due to its hazardous properties, phenol should be handled, stored, and disposed of in accordance with applicable industrial safety and environmental requirements.
With its versatile chemical reactivity and extensive downstream applications, phenol remains an important building block in modern chemical and materials manufacturing.
