Mercury stands unique among all metallic elements as the sole metal that remains in liquid state under standard room temperature conditions. Naturally existent in the form of cinnabar (mercuric sulfide), mercury features a low boiling point, which enables simple industrial purification. It can be easily extracted from cinnabar ore through heating vaporization, followed by vapor condensation to obtain high-purity mercury metal up to 99.9% purity.
When solidified, mercury exhibits excellent ductility and malleability with extremely soft texture, allowing it to be cut effortlessly with a regular knife. Thermally, it serves as a low-efficiency heat conductor, while retaining stable electrical conductivity. Chemically, mercury presents inert characteristics similar to noble gases. It stays unreactive with most conventional acids, yet dissolves rapidly in strong oxidizing acids. Additionally, it can readily bond with diverse metals such as gold, zinc and aluminum to form stable mercury amalgams.
