Poly(vinyl alcohol)

Water Solubility and Biodegradability: PVA offers good water solubility, particularly in warm or hot water, and can biodegrade under suitable environmental conditions. These properties make it suitable for water-soluble films, dissolvable packaging, agricultural applications, and laundry bags.

Excellent Film-Forming and Adhesive Properties: Its high density of hydroxyl groups enables strong hydrogen bonding, providing good film strength, adhesion, and barrier performance. PVA is widely used in paper coatings, textile sizing, adhesives, and water-soluble films.

Good Compatibility and Low Toxicity: PVA generally exhibits good biocompatibility and low toxicity, supporting its use in selected pharmaceutical, medical, personal-care, and specialty material applications, subject to the required grade and regulatory standards.

Adjustable Performance for Industrial Processing: PVA grades with different degrees of polymerization and hydrolysis can be selected to control water solubility, viscosity, film strength, and other performance characteristics. It can be processed through solution casting, coating, and other conventional manufacturing methods, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

Product Description

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer typically supplied as a white powder, flakes, or irregular particles. Its glass transition temperature generally ranges from approximately 60–85°C, depending on the degree of polymerization and hydrolysis.

Due to its high concentration of hydroxyl groups and polar functional groups, PVA readily forms hydrogen bonds with water, giving it good water solubility and film-forming properties. Its solubility is affected by factors such as molecular weight, degree of hydrolysis, temperature, and formulation conditions.

PVA is readily soluble in water and certain hot polar solvents, including glycerol and phenol. It has limited or poor solubility in many conventional organic solvents, such as benzene, acetone, and gasoline.

With its combination of water solubility, film-forming ability, adhesion, and chemical versatility, PVA is widely used in adhesives, paper and textile processing, coatings, water-soluble films, construction materials, and other industrial applications.
