Zinc Bromide (ZnBr₂), CAS No. 7699-45-8, is a highly hygroscopic white crystalline compound with excellent water solubility. It is available in industrial applications mainly as anhydrous zinc bromide powder and aqueous zinc bromide solution.
Thanks to its high density, strong ionic conductivity, and Lewis acidity, zinc bromide is used across several specialized industrial sectors, with applications ranging from oil and gas operations to energy storage and fine chemical synthesis.

1. Oil & Gas Industry
The oil and gas industry is one of the largest application areas for zinc bromide. Aqueous zinc bromide solutions are used to formulate high-density, solids-free clear-brine completion and workover fluids, as well as fluids for other well servicing operations.
Zinc bromide brine can achieve densities of up to 2.3 g/cm³, making it suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature deep wells and offshore oilfields. Its high density helps provide sufficient hydrostatic pressure to balance formation pressure, control well conditions, and support wellbore stability.
Because these fluids contain no solid particles, they can help minimize the risk of plugging formation pores and reduce potential formation damage. Zinc bromide is also commonly blended with calcium bromide or sodium bromide to achieve the required fluid density. Due to the mildly acidic nature of zinc bromide solutions, appropriate corrosion inhibitors are generally required.
2. Energy Storage: Zinc-Bromine Flow Batteries
Zinc bromide is also an important electrolyte material for zinc-bromine flow battery systems, an energy-storage technology used for stationary applications.
In these batteries, zinc and bromine ions participate in reversible redox reactions to store and release electrical energy. The technology is suited to applications such as grid-scale energy storage and renewable energy integration, where long-duration operation and deep discharge capability are important.
For battery applications, high-purity anhydrous zinc bromide is generally preferred to meet stringent electrolyte quality requirements.
3. Organic Synthesis and Fine Chemicals
Anhydrous zinc bromide can function as a Lewis acid catalyst and bromine-containing reagent in organic synthesis.
It is used in various chemical reactions, including Friedel-Crafts reactions, cyclization, condensation, olefin addition, and bromination. These properties make zinc bromide useful in the production of pharmaceutical intermediates, fine chemicals, and other specialty chemical compounds.
4. Radiation-Shielding Viewing Windows
High-concentration zinc bromide solutions combine high density with optical transparency, enabling their use as liquid radiation-shielding media in specialized viewing systems.
One application is the viewing windows of hot cells and nuclear facilities, where transparent shielding is required for remote observation. Compared with conventional lead glass, liquid zinc bromide shielding systems can offer resistance to radiation-induced darkening, making them suitable for specialized radiation environments.
5. Other Industrial Applications
Beyond these major applications, zinc bromide can also be used in several other fields, including:
Pharmaceuticals: Raw material for pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis
Photosensitive materials: Raw material for traditional photographic emulsions
Synthetic fibers: Post-treatment agent for rayon and other synthetic fibers
Chemical analysis: Laboratory analytical reagent
Flame retardants: Intermediate for the production of brominated flame-retardant materials
A Versatile Material for Specialized Industrial Applications
From high-density clear brines for oil and gas wells to electrolytes for flow batteries and reagents for fine chemical synthesis, zinc bromide offers a combination of properties that supports a wide range of specialized applications.
The appropriate grade, concentration, purity, and formulation should be selected according to the specific process requirements and end-use conditions.
